The eleventh volume of the Anthology That Is Good has been compiled, edited, and sent to print. Preliminary date of publication is June 15th.

All content is one or another form of variation on comics that have previously published in C’est Bon Anthology by C’est Bon Kultur members:

Oskar Aspman went and remixed Niklas Asker’s story Second Thoughts, originally published in CBA vol. 7.
Mattias Elftorp has reinterpreted an illustration by Daniel Novakovic, originally published in Publikation(34)C’est Bon.
Sofia Falkenhem took Martin Flink’s story The Troll for a spin, originally published in CBA vol. 7.
Martin Flink contributes a variation of Jamil Mani’s story Passage, originally published in CBA vol. 4.
Susanne Johanssons has made a photocollage of Johan Jergner-Ekervik’s story H2O, originally published in CBA vol. 6
Jamil Mani redid Sofia Falkenhem’s story Dawn, originally published in CBA vol. 8
My own contributions to this volume of CBA is SEX (after Mattias Elftorp’s story Violence, originally published in CBA vol. 3) and the cover (above), a tribute to Nathan Fox’ cover for CBA vol. 2.

I’ve been thinking about getting the hell off Facebook for awhile, but something always comes up. That’s the thing with Facebook, there’s always another friend to add, or another app to block. Could we all just please poke each other every once in a while and keep it at that?

As you may have noticed I’m pretty active on Twitter, I like the simplicity of it and the fact that the service doesn’t try to sell me anything. Facebook, on the other hand, steals a bit from Twitter, a bit from Flickr, adds basic email and chat functions, wraps it in a fenced community and throws more commercials at you than you would tolerate anywhere else.

It’s like Grand fucking Central. And I’m just getting sick of it. I don’t care about the speculated, possible, doomsayer privacy issues. For Facebook to actually harvest and abuse people’s personal information and uploaded photos would be such a breach of confidence that the service wouldn’t recover.

So here you go Facebook. Take my pictures, I have them in better resolution on backup. And my IP rights are constitutionally secured, even in that banana republic where your servers are kept. I’m more worried about all the time I wasted, and could continue to waste if I don’t shake the habit now. I’m pretty sure Facebook owes me about a month’s worth of daylight, and at least two weeks of sleep.

I’m going, before I lose any more. Out to smell the real Internet again. Where pixels aren’t just white or blue. I’m not going to erase my profile on FB, not yet anyway, but I won’t be there. And it’s not like I’m severing ties, just asking that friends, family, and other contacts find me where I actually want to spend time. I’m hardly keeping my online presence a secret, quite the contrary.

My current and future focus will just be on my own blog, my Twitter stream, my email inbox, and my honest-to-Bob, real-life work. Talk to you on the other side of the fence!

Wertham’s Razor

Since I was gloating months ago on Twitter about this bright new idea of mine, I thought I might as well expand a bit on it here. Also, I’ve been terrible at updating the blog, so everything counts, I guess!
The outline below came to me after this year’s Angoulême festival. My girlfriend and I spent a few days in Paris before going home, when she got a phone call from her sister, saying that one of the sister’s two hamsters had died.

She and her then-boyfriend had found it belly-up in the sawdust when they woke up, its abdomen showing clear bitemarks. All the while the other hamster was pounding the treadmill with oblivious glee. How can you pass up a scene like that?

So, here’s what I came up with:

Two hamsters, Fluffy and Wertham, live in a cage. The treadmill is their only entertainment, not least their internal bickering over it.

One morning Fluffy is lying dead in the sawdust, mutilated. Whodunit?

A new hamster, Tantor, is put into the cage, and Wertham begins investigating the circumstances of Fluffy’s death, with Tantor as the chief suspect.

That’s it. Oh, I know how it’s going to end, but I’m not letting on

As I said, this was right after Angoulême, and I was obviously inspired by Cali & Pianina’s “10 petits Insects” to try my hand with a whodunit, but that’s the only similarity.

“10 petits Insects” is a great piece of work, btw, as testified by its inclusion to the Sélection Officiale of Angoulême BD 2010. Highly recommended while you wait for me to finish “Wertham’s Razor”

Afart publishing

I mentioned some time back that I had been laid off from work (as a keyboard chimp and graphics go-to guy at Danish comics publisher Faraos Cigarer).
Although I’ve never been bothered much by reality or rationality, I did realise the arrested cashflow might become a problem… Fortunately, I hooked up for lunch with an old acquaintance from the Copenhagen comics scene.
Thomas Schroeder was one of the people who started the CPH festival Komiks.dk, he’s a longtime writer and editor for the Egmont corporation’s Disney line – and he just so happened to be out of a job at the same time.
We discussed the possibility of starting our own publishing company for a couple of weeks, realised that we could base a steady income on our own output (him writing, me drawing and laying out seemed natural), and maybe run a few con amore-sideshows for fun as well.
And here we are: Forlaget Afart, teaching kids to read Danish. I didn’t see that one coming a year ago! Oh, and when you’re done snickering at the name, ‘afart’ means ‘variant’ in Danish

The Twitter effect

I’m assuming that, if you’re new to this site, you have come here on advice from David B. Metcalfe, Eric Orchard, or Derik Badman. These three gentlemen have been more than generous in their recent statements about my work, and I am grateful to them.

Since you have been thusly misled into believing I produce any work of artistic merit, I urge you to take a peek through the categories “Comics” and “Sketch of the day” (the menu to the right of this post. That should set the record straight.

If you’re still not convinced of my hackery after that, surf on to the workblog of my current project, Astoria and judge for yourself.

I now work at Malmö’s pittoresque Seriecenter, along with my buddies from C’est Bon Kultur, and will be posting frequently about our new anthology issues!
On a bummer note, I lost my steady paying gig with publisher Faraos Cigarer, but will continue to work with them on a freelance basis.
There will also be a few new comic projects announced here in the near future, so stay tuned!
